Discrete DC/DC solutions are designs composed of discrete components assembled into a product, along with the other components, by the end equipment manufacturer. Several IC vendors offer a PWM solution along with a reference design to complete the DC/DC including inductors, FETs and miscellaneous circuitry. Meanwhile, monolithic DC/DC modules are complete DC/DC (including inductor) in an IC-like package. Their low profile (about 2-3mm) allows for mounting on the backside of the customer board or use under mezzanine cards, and operate with very high switching frequencies such as 2-5MHz. Finally, digital control point of load converters offer digital control for enable; current, voltage and temperature monitoring; programming the output voltage; margining; protection thresholds; and can operate with or without an I²C bus.
