As seen in the previous slide, a big challenge in industrial imaging applications is to transport this large amount of video data efficiently from source to destination. SerDes devices reduce a wide parallel bus to few signals and simplify the job of transporting the data. By reducing the number of signals the system cost decreases by: decreasing the size of the connector used as well as by reducing the cost of cabling by decreasing number of wires. Channel Link SerDes provide a simplified interface for transporting parallel data. They work with all data patterns, and they do not need any overhead for protocol or coding. They also do not need any reference clock or training patterns and offer a plug and play solution.
