For a 16 channel DO solution, a deserializer with FET drivers and FETs might be a way to reduce the number of lines to be isolated, but finding a deserializer may be difficult since many SERDES devices are catered for gigabit Ethernet applications. To avoid finding a microcontroller with 16 GPIOs or an IO expander, there are ‘addressable’ multi-channel FET drivers in the market. Two of these eight channel FET drivers along with 16 discrete FETs are possible as shown here in the block diagram, but adding extra diagnostics like monitoring of temperature and voltage or open load/wire detection may add further components on the board, increasing size and power dissipation.
