Multi-Channel Digital Isolator for 24 V Input Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Applications

Si838x isolator family

The Si838x offers a compact, high-speed, high noise immunity (50 kV/μs CMTI typ.) isolation solution for interfacing multiple 24 V digital inputs with an embedded processor in programmable logic controller (PLC) applications. The Si838x features bipolar input flexibility to accommodate sinking or sourcing inputs with no power supply required on the field side, 2.25 VDD low-power processor interface to the controller, and high-speed capability up to 2 Mbps for servo motor control.

The Si838x is the industry’s first high-speed, multi-channel digital isolators designed for programmable logic controller (PLC) applications requiring high-speed channels (up to 2 Mbps), channel integration (up to eight channels per device), bipolar input flexibility, high noise immunity (50 kV/µs CMTI typical), and 2.5 kV RMS safety isolation. The Si838x family provides a robust solution for PLC applications including industrial I/O modules, computer numerical control (CNC) machines and servo motor control. The Si838x isolators feature a flexible bipolar input capability that gives developers a choice of sinking or sourcing inputs. The controller interface can be eight parallel channels or a four-port SPI. Designers can “daisy chain” 16 Si838x isolators in a system design to create PLCs with up to 128 channels supported by a single serial peripheral interface (SPI) port on the system’s embedded processor. Developers can now easily migrate their optocoupler-based designs to state-of-the-art digital isolation technology providing the benefits of higher performance, greater design flexibility, higher channel density and long-term reliability.

Si88xx family of products combine high-speed digital isolators with an isolated power supply. This integrated product for signal and power isolation provides a complete isolation solution to designers. The Si88xx has up to four high-speed digital isolation channels integrated with a modified fly-back topology based DC-DC converter. The DC-DC converter works in conjunction with an external transformer to provide up to 2 W of isolated power that can be used to supply the secondary side of the Si88xx as well as drive other circuits on the isolated side. The converter provides a high 78% efficiency that meets green power energy requirements.

Si828x ISOdriver family

The new Si828x ISOdriver portfolio is a family of isolated gate drivers designed to protect insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) switches in power inverter and motor drive applications with features such as desaturation detection and secondary side power-on indication that are essential for IGBT drive applications.

The new Si828x ISOdriver family provides industrial-grade isolation (5 kV RMS withstand), best-in-class feature integration including an optional DC-DC converter, the industry’s fastest desaturation detection, superior timing characteristics, and exceptional noise and transient immunity.

The defining Si828x feature is a 4 amp gate driver coupled with desaturation detection to monitor the IGBT for over-current. In that event, the Si828x driver initiates a controlled shutdown of the switch while updating the controller with the fault status, protecting the IGBT and the system. Additional integrated features include split outputs, a Miller clamp to prevent parasitic gate turn-on, and driver power state and fault feedback to the controller.

The Si828x family includes driver versions with an integrated isolated DC-DC converter, which helps developers simplify the layout, reduce component count and board size, and ease the complexity of creating and managing multiple power domains. A single power bus can be routed across the system, eliminating complex spacing concerns.

The Si828x family provides an ideal solution for industrial motor drives, solar inverters, high-voltage power converters, uninterruptable power supplies, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) compressor control.

Si875x Isolated FET driver family

The new Si875x isolated FET driver offers a unique way for designers to replace solid-state relays (SSRs) or electromechanical relays (EMRs) with a cost-optimized, application specific FET that delivers robust isolation, a convenient interface, efficient FET gate drive capability, and unique optional features for noise and power reduction.

The new Si875x family features the industry’s first isolated FET drivers that enables designers to pair with an application-specific, high-volume discrete FET to replace electromechanical relays (EMR) and Optocoupler-based Solid-State Relay (SSR) for motor control, HVAC relays, AC mains line and communications switches. The Si875x isolated FET driver provides a better alternative to electromechanical relays that reduces systems cost and power, provides superior stability over time and temperature, and improves switching noise and reliability. A floating secondary side DC voltage source in the Si875x generates its own gate drive output voltage that reduces circuit cost, size and complexity.
