Image of Analog Devices' LTM4658 10 A Step-Down μModule® RegulatorADI's LTM4658 is a complete 10 A step-down switching mode μModule regulator in a tiny 4 mm x 4 mm x 4.32 mm LGA package. The package includes the switching controller, power MOSFETs, inductor, and all support components. Operating over an input voltage range of 2.25 V to 5.5 V, the LTM4658 supports an output voltage range of 0.5 V to VIN set by external resistors. Its high-efficiency design delivers 10 A continuous output current. Only ceramic input and output capacitors are needed.

The LTM4658 employs a Silent Switcher®2 architecture with internal hot loop bypass capacitors to achieve low EMI and high efficiency at high switching frequencies.

The LTM4658 supports frequency synchronization, multiphase operation, selectable pulse-skipping mode operation, and output voltage tracking for supply rail sequencing. Its high switching frequency and current mode architecture enable a very fast transient response to line and load changes without sacrificing stability.

Fault protection features include overvoltage, overcurrent, and overtemperature protection. The LTM4658 is Pb-free and RoHS compliant.

Demonstration circuit DC2861A features the LTM4658, a high efficiency, 10 A step-down power μModule regulator. The input voltage range is from 2.25 V to 5.5 V. The output voltage range is 0.5 V to VIN. Derating may be necessary for certain VIN, VOUT, frequency, and thermal conditions. The DC2861A offers the SSTT pin allowing the user to program output tracking, soft-start period, and die temperature monitoring.

The MODE/SYNC pin either synchronizes the switching frequency to an external clock, is a clock output, or sets the PWM mode. It can be externally synchronized to a clock from 1 MHz to 2.25 MHz. The PWM modes of operation are forced continuous mode for low noise or pulse-skipping (PS) mode for high efficiency at light load. The LTM4658 defaults to forced continuous mode during synchronization. The LTM4658 operates in pulse-skipping mode when both the FREQ and MODE/SYNC pins are connected to VIN.

LTM4658 has an internal compensation circuit that guarantees sufficient stability margins and good transient performance with a wide range of output capacitors, even with all-ceramic output capacitors.

For output loads demanding more than 10 A of current, multiple LTM4658s can be paralleled to run out of phase to provide more output current without increasing input and output voltage ripples.
